If you love where you live now, then a remodel is probably the obvious choice. Obviously, you have the ability to customize nearly every aspect of your new home when you build it from scratch, which may be the more attractive option if you don’t want to face as many restrictions on executing your vision. However, be advised that a new construction home will take substantially more time and effort to complete than a general remodel.

Keep Your Budget in Mind

Of course, a new construction home is going to be significantly more expensive than a general remodel. Costs can range anywhere from $400 to $800 per square foot depending on a number of factors. However, the upside is you get a house that’s fully customized to you. Additionally with a remodel, you’re able to control costs more tightly and you’ll likely have to account for fewer contingencies since it’s a smaller scale project.  While cost is a factor, remember that you have several ways to finance either option. You can do a new construction home loan or pull existing equity of your home to finance a remodel.
